THE VOTES ARE IN: NEW YORK SURF FILM FESTIVAL PRESENTED BY BARBADOS IS PROUD TO ANNOUNCE OUR 2011 AWARDS

New York, NY, October 13, 2011 – The 2011 New York Surf Film Festival (NYSFF) presented by Barbados is pleased to present our Official Jury 2011 NYSFF Film Awards for outstanding work in both feature and short form film, cinematography, and soundtrack, as well as the viewer’s choice selection. With three days of sold out screenings, over 2,500 people in attendance and numerous premieres and parties, the 4th annual NYSFF welcomed international filmmakers, surfers, friends, and media to Cinema Village, NYC on September 15th  - 17th , 2011 for an unprecedented arrangement of 40 films from around the world, intimate Q&A sessions and a lively party at STAND4 with libations courtesy of Brugal Rum and Goose Island Beer.

The 2011 NYSFF Screening Panel Proudly Awards the following films:

2011 BEST FEATURE FILM AWARD: COME HELL OR HIGH WATER; Directed by Keith Malloy; With Scott Soens, Dave Homcy, Thomas Campbell, Jeff Hornbaker, Cyrus Sutton Mark Cunningham, Mike Stewart, Dan Malloy, Chris Kalima, Thomas Melum, Crystal Thornber-Homcy; Duration : 40 minutes; Website: woodshed.com;  Synopsis : Keith Malloy’s debut film, Come Hell or High Water, shot primarily on 16mm focuses on the simplicity and beauty of bodysurfing. Keith explores the history and progression of the sport through its many unique characters. “It’s about taking a breath, and kicking your feet, in the big blue sea.”

2011 BEST NOT SO SHORT SHORT FILM AWARD: CHASING THE SWELL; Directed by Sachi Cunningham; With Grant Baker, Chris Bertish, Carlos Burle, Shane Dorian, Mark Healey, Greg Long, Ramon Navarro, James Taylor, Mike Schlebach; Synopsis: The film chronicles the exploits of a handful of big wave hunters last winter as they traveled to Waimea Bay on the north shore of Oahu, Mavericks off Pillar Point in Half Moon Bay, and Isla Todos Santos, a small island off Baja California.

2011 BEST SHORT FILM AWARD: LUNCHBREAK; Directed by Clare Plueckhahn & Fran Derham;  With Laura Enever, Tyler Wright, Serena Brooke, Ellie-Jean Coffey, Felicity Palmateer, Kirby Wright, Codie Klein, Dru Adler, Cahill Bell Warren, Jason, Jameson, Noah Lane, Brent Savage, Ty Watson, Kai Hing & Alyssa Lock;  Synopsis: ‘Lunchbreak’ is a short surfing film that combines high performance surfing action with a cheeky twist on a North Shore legend.  A group of male surfers are out surfing when the local ‘Wolf Pack’ comes and calls ‘lunch break’ kicking them out of the water. The ‘Wolf Pack’s’ session doesn’t last long though, a group of groms are hot on their tales, determined to teach them a lesson.

2011 BEST SOUNDTRACK AWARD: THIRTY THOUSAND; Directed by Richard James and Andrew James; With Richard James andAndrew James; Duration : 48 minutes; Website: thirtythousand.com.au; Synopsis: Thirty Thousand follows twin brothers Richard and Andrew James as they travel 30,000 kilometers down the west coast of Africa on a 9-month surfing odyssey from Casablanca to Cape Town. Along the way they surf in Morocco, Western Sahara, Senegal, Liberia, Angola, Namibia and South Africa. The film documents the waves, cultures and landscapes of this long and diverse coastline.

2011 VIEWER’S CHOICE AWARD; LOST & FOUND; Directed by Doug Walker; With Aaron Chang, Dan Merkel, Bob Barbour, Gerry Lopez, Rory Russell, Buttons Kaluhiokalani, Bobby Owens, Larry Bertlemann, Jock Sutherland, Greg Weaver, Bernie Baker, Randy Rarrick, Herbie Fletcher, Candy Moore; Duration: 65 minutes; Synopsis: Lost & Found is a documentary based on the discovery of 30,000 b&w negatives found at a flea market in Pasadena, Ca. It’s a journey over 3 plus years of reuniting and sharing the images capturing stories if not told will be lost.

The New York Surf Film Festival is also pleased to announce the continuing support of the Barbados Tourism Authority (BTA) for our 5 year anniversary festival in September 2012.  The BTA has pledged alongside the NYSFF over $15,000 in charitable contributions through our digital screening program initiative – bringing online film screenings year round to benefit NYSFF 501c(3) partners.  Charitable organizations, filmmakers, and corporate partners can learn how to participate in this new initiative by emailing [email protected] for more information.
